How to use it

4 simple steps.

  1. 01

    Your commute

Minutes each way, days a week and weeks a year.

  2. 02

    Anything else

Add the gym, a walk or chores if you listen then too.

  3. 03

    Speed and books

Your playback speed and the length of the books you like.

  4. 04

    Your year

The books your commute adds up to, and what a faster speed would add.

The maths

Minutes each way × 2, plus any other daily listening, × days a week × weeks a year gives your listening hours. Multiply by your speed for the hours of book you hear, then divide by the book length. Weeks default to 46, leaving out about six weeks of holidays.

Planning beyond the commute? The reading goal planner works from minutes a day, and the audiobook player plays your own books with a sleep timer and bookmarks.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

How many audiobooks can I finish on my commute?

A 30-minute commute each way, five days a week for 46 weeks, is 230 hours a year: about 21 typical 11-hour audiobooks at normal speed, or 26 at 1.25×.

How long is a typical audiobook?

Most novels run 8 to 14 hours. Thrillers and romance are often shorter; epic fantasy and big histories often run past 20 hours.

Is it safe to listen while driving?

Audiobooks are hands-free once playing: set the book, speed and volume before you set off, and use the steering wheel or headphone buttons rather than the phone. If a passage needs your full attention, rewind later.

What if I listen at a faster speed?

Every minute at 1.5× covers a minute and a half of the book, so the books a year rise in step. The result shows 1×, 1.25×, 1.5× and 2× side by side.
