Rules checked on 22 and 23 October 2026 against ACX, Findaway Voices (INaudio) and Google Play Books. Stores change their rules; check their pages before you publish.

ACX also requires the title and author on every cover, with no blurry or pixelated text, no Audible branding, no references to physical media, prices, running time or other stores, no barcodes or QR codes, and no book jackets. Findaway Voices checks that the title, author and series on the cover match the metadata and the opening credits exactly.

From an ebook cover to an audiobook cover

Ebook and print covers are portrait, usually around 1:1.6; audiobook covers are square. There are three ways from one to the other, and only one is reliably accepted:

ApproachResult
Pad the sides (bars, a colour, or a blurred copy)Rejected: ACX’s own example of a rejected cover has “borders to make a rectangle into a square”, and Findaway Voices forbids borders and letterboxing
Crop a square from the middleUsually cuts through the title and the author’s name
Rebuild: a square of the artwork, with the title and author set againThe way designers do it, and what “Rebuild with text” does

To rebuild, zoom into the picture and drag the square to a part without the old lettering (the sky, the figure, the texture), type the title and author exactly as they appear in your metadata, and add the narrator if you want it on the cover. Three styles (a serif, a bold sans and light capitals) are set from fonts free to use commercially (Instrument Serif and Geist, under the SIL Open Font License). Each line is sized to the largest that fits, never below a size that stays readable as a thumbnail; the colour follows the picture, with an optional soft shade behind the words.

The “Only from Audible” corner

For titles sold exclusively through ACX, Audible may add an “Only from Audible” graphic to the lower-right corner, reaching 41% of the way in: on a 2400 px cover, 984 px from the corner. ACX asks you to send a revised image if the graphic hides part of your art. The rebuild keeps text out of that triangle (and shows it), so the badge never covers your title.

A professional cover designer will do better than any tool for a book you want to stand out; this gets a correct, clean square cover from the art you already own.

Designing for a thumbnail

Most listeners first see your cover the size of a stamp. Keep the title and author large and inside the safe area (the dashed square), use strong contrast, and test it at the small sizes the tool shows. audiobook.tools is not affiliated with Audible, ACX, Spotify, Google or Kobo.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What size should an audiobook cover be?

Square, at least 2400 × 2400 pixels. ACX and Spotify’s distributor ask for 2400 px (Google Play’s minimum is 1,024 px and Kobo’s 600 px); 3000 × 3000 is a safe choice if your artwork is that large.

Can I use my ebook or paperback cover?

Not as it is: book covers are portrait and audiobook covers must be square. Padding the sides is rejected (ACX’s own example of a rejected cover has “borders to make a rectangle into a square”), and a plain crop usually cuts off the title. Drop the ebook cover here and use “Rebuild with text”: pick a square of the artwork without the old lettering, type the title and author, and it sets them again in one of three styles.

How do I make a square audiobook cover from an ebook cover?

Drop the ebook cover, keep “Rebuild with text”, zoom and drag to a square of the picture without the old title, type the title and author exactly as in your metadata (and the narrator if you like), choose a layout and lettering, then make the 2400 px cover. It comes out as a square RGB JPG that passes ACX, Spotify, Google Play and Kobo.

What is the “Only from Audible” badge?

For titles distributed exclusively through ACX, Audible may add an “Only from Audible” graphic to the lower-right corner of the cover, reaching 41% of the way in from the corner (984 px on a 2400 px cover). Keep your title and author out of that triangle: the rebuild does this for you.

Why does CMYK fail?

CMYK is for print. Stores need RGB, and a CMYK file can show wrong colours or be rejected. The tool converts it, but check the colours afterwards: some print colours look different on screen.

Does DPI matter?

Not for how the cover looks: only the pixel size does. ACX lists 72 dpi as a minimum anyway, so the fixed cover is saved at 300 dpi to satisfy any check that reads it.

What gets a cover rejected besides size?

Missing or illegible title and author, a title that doesn’t match the audiobook’s, blurry or pixelated text, borders, prices or running times, website addresses, barcodes or QR codes, pictures of physical books or CDs, a book jacket with front and back covers, Audible branding, and images you don’t have the rights to. Findaway Voices also checks that the title, author and series match the metadata and the opening credits exactly. Those need a person to check; this tool covers the technical rules.

Is my cover uploaded?

No. It is checked and resized in your browser and never leaves your device.
