  • ACX also requires the section header spoken in each file, opening and closing credits as separate files, standard letters and numbers in file names, and a retail sample of 5 minutes or less.1
  • Google Play accepts a supplementary PDF under 100 MB.2 Auto-narrated books it creates must also be sold on Google Play wherever they’re sold, at no higher price.9
  • Voices by INaudio (formerly Findaway Voices) requires constant bit rate files; its full requirements page needs an account to read, and published guides quote ACX’s format and levels.5
  • Apple Books takes audiobooks only through its preferred partners, whose delivery rules apply.6
  • Kobo asks for a unique ISBN if you supply one (not the print ISBN), and assigns one if you don’t.4

Questions people ask

Everything else, answered.

What are the audiobook requirements for ACX?

MP3 at 192 kbps or higher, constant bit rate, 44.1 kHz; RMS between −23 and −18 dB, peaks no higher than −3 dB, noise floor −60 dB or lower; 1 to 5 seconds of room tone at each end; one chapter per file, none over 120 minutes; all mono or all stereo; plus a 5-minute retail sample.

What audio format does Google Play Books accept?

MP3, AAC (M4A), FLAC, WAV, ZIP or LPF. MP3 at 128 kbps or more for mono or 256 kbps for stereo (constant bit rate preferred); FLAC and WAV at 16 bits and 44.1 kHz or more. A book runs 5 minutes to 100 hours.

What does Spotify for Authors accept?

MP3, WAV or FLAC audio, and a square PNG or JPEG cover, 3000 × 3000 px recommended.

What does Kobo accept?

MP3 only, each file up to 200 MB and 2 GB for the whole book. Kobo compresses most audio to about 64 kbps, so higher bitrates aren’t needed. Covers should be square, at least 600 × 600 px and under 5 MB.

What size should an audiobook cover be?

Square, and 2400 × 2400 px meets every store here: ACX asks for at least 2400 px, Spotify for Authors recommends 3000 px, Google Play’s minimum is 1,024 px and Kobo’s 600 px.

Can one set of files work for every store?

Usually: files that pass ACX (192 kbps CBR MP3 at 44.1 kHz, ACX levels and room tone) meet Google Play, Spotify, Kobo and the distributors too. Check them all at once with the platform spec checker.

Do these requirements change?

Yes. ACX changed its room tone guidance and its royalty model in 2026. Every rule here is dated and linked to the store’s own page; check that page before you publish.
