FAQ

Questions, answered.

Why clean text before text-to-speech?

Voices read what they see. Text from a PDF breaks mid-sentence at every line, says “twelve” at every page number, repeats the book’s title from every header, and reads footnote numbers aloud. Abbreviations and numbers are often read wrongly too: “St.” can be Saint or Street, “1984” should be a year.

Will it change my words?

Only what a voice would get wrong. Every change is counted and shown with examples, and each kind of change can be turned off.

How does it tell page numbers from chapter numbers?

Lines like “Page 12”, “— 12 —” and lowercase roman numerals are page numbers. A bare number counts only when they recur every page or so; a lone “IV” or “3” before a long chapter is kept.

Can it read a PDF file?

Paste text you’ve copied from a PDF and it fixes what copying breaks. To turn a whole PDF into audio, PDF to audiobook reads the file itself: it knows where the headers, page numbers and footnotes sit on the page, and narrates the result.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser.
