  4. 04

Keep your books or rent them, pay per credit or per hour: the cost per book makes it plain.

How the comparison works

Credit plans (Audible Premium, Libro.fm) cover one book a month; books beyond that are bought at the member price. Audible Standard covers one book a month and charges full price for more. Spotify counts hours, not books: Premium and Audiobooks Access include 15 hours a month, then the cheaper of Audiobooks+ and top-ups is added. Everand unlocks 1, 3 or 5 titles a month. All figures are monthly averages.

One thing a price can’t show: with Audible and Libro.fm the books stay yours; with Spotify and Everand they go when you stop paying.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Is Spotify or Audible cheaper for audiobooks?

It depends how much you listen. Spotify Premium ($12.99 a month, music included) gives 15 hours of audiobooks a month: one or two books. Audible Premium ($14.95) gives one credit for any book, which you keep. Light listeners usually pay less with Spotify; long books and keeping your library favour Audible or Libro.fm.

Do I keep the audiobooks?

With Audible and Libro.fm you own the books you buy with credits, even if you cancel (Audible’s are DRM-protected and play in its app; Libro.fm’s are DRM-free). Spotify and Everand lend them while you subscribe. Libraries lend for free, with waiting lists for popular books.

What happens when I use up my Spotify hours?

You can add Audiobooks+ (15 more hours for $11.99 a month) or buy top-ups (10 hours, reported at $12.99, valid 12 months). Unused monthly hours don’t roll over. The calculator picks whichever is cheaper for your hours.

Is Libro.fm worth it?

It costs about the same as Audible ($14.99 a month for one credit), credits never expire, the books are DRM-free, and each purchase supports an independent bookstore. It’s for the US and Canada.

Are these prices current?

They’re US prices checked on the date shown under the results, from each service’s own pages where possible. Prices change and differ by country, so check before you subscribe.
