Best Audiobook Player Apps for Your Own MP3 and M4B Files

Audiobook players for your own MP3 and M4B files on every platform: price, chapters, sleep timers, CarPlay and Android Auto, and adding books.

The short answer

For audiobooks you own as files, use a player made for audiobooks: it keeps your place in every book, shows chapters, and has a sleep timer and speed control, which music players don’t. The best free ones are BookPlayer on iPhone, Voice on Android and Cozy on Linux; on Windows and Mac, a browser-based player or VLC.1,7,12,13 For a shared library across devices, a self-hosted Audiobookshelf server.10

The best players on each platform

BookPlayer is “a wonderful player for your M4B/M4A/MP3/FLAC based audiobooks”: chapters, speed, smart rewind, a volume boost, an adjustable sleep timer, CarPlay, VoiceOver, an Apple Watch companion that plays on its own, and Cloud Sync across devices. It’s free with in-app purchases, and open source under the GPL.1

  • Adding books: AirDrop from a Mac or another iPhone, open from the Files app, use File Sharing in Finder or iTunes, import a ZIP of folders, or connect your own Audiobookshelf or Jellyfin server.1

Apple Books has chapters, narration speed and a sleep timer built in.2 Your own audiobooks get there from a Mac: import them into Books, then sync audiobooks to the iPhone in Finder.3,4

Prologue plays the books on your Plex or Audiobookshelf server (“It doesn’t sell books or come with any of its own”), with downloads for offline listening, a sleep timer to the end of a chapter, bookmarks with notes, CarPlay and Apple Watch, and it now runs on Android 15 or later too. It’s free, with a one-time Premium unlock.5,6

What to look for

  • Your place in every book, not just the last one. This is what music players get wrong.
  • Chapters from the file (M4B chapter markers, or ID3 chapters in MP3), and a folder of MP3s treated as one book.
  • A sleep timer, ideally one that can stop at the end of a chapter.
  • Speed without chipmunk voices, and a short rewind when you resume.
  • The formats you have. M4B and MP3 everywhere; FLAC, Opus and OGG vary by app.
  • Car and watch support if you listen there: CarPlay, Android Auto, Apple Watch.

Players for a shared library: Audiobookshelf and Plex

Audiobookshelf is a free, open-source, self-hosted audiobook and podcast server: it streams every format, keeps progress for each listener, edits chapters, works as a web app, and has an Android app in beta; its iOS beta is full.10,11 On iPhone, Prologue and BookPlayer can connect to it; on Android, Listen can sync with it.1,5,9 Plex plays M4B, but users report that Plexamp treats a book as one long track and ignores its chapters; Prologue adds proper audiobook playback on top of a Plex server.5,15

Listeners who need something simpler

For blind and partially sighted listeners, BookPlayer supports VoiceOver on iPhone.1 Dedicated talking players, the Victor Reader Stream and Bones Milestone, are built for it, and Audible supports them through AudibleSync on Windows.16 For a child or an older listener, a phone app is often too fiddly: an MP3 player or a USB stick of MP3s can be easier, one file per chapter.

M4B to MP3 ConverterTurn an M4B into MP3s for a simple player, a USB stick or a car: one file, or numbered parts. Free · runs in your browser · nothing uploadedOpen the tool

Opening one M4B file on a particular device, step by step, is in how to play M4B files; turning a folder of MP3s into one book with chapters is the MP3 to M4B maker.

Questions people ask

Everything else, answered.

What is the best audiobook player for iPhone?

For your own files, BookPlayer: free, open source, plays M4B, M4A, MP3 and FLAC with chapters, speed, a sleep timer, CarPlay and Apple Watch. Apple Books plays audiobooks synced from a Mac. For a Plex or Audiobookshelf server, Prologue.

What is the best audiobook player for Android?

Voice is free, open source, without ads or paid upgrades, with chapters, bookmarks, a sleep timer and Android Auto. Listen Audiobook Player is a paid app with the most controls and Plex and Audiobookshelf syncing. Smart AudioBook Player has a free basic version and a one-time upgrade.

What is the best audiobook player for Windows?

There is no standout Windows audiobook app. VLC plays M4B with a chapter menu, but doesn’t keep a place per book like an audiobook app. A browser-based audiobook player, like ours, gives you chapters, speed, a sleep timer and your place in each book without installing anything.

Is there a free audiobook player with no ads?

Yes. Voice on Android is free and open source, with no ads and no paid upgrades. BookPlayer on iPhone is free and open source, with optional in-app purchases. Cozy on Linux, VLC everywhere and our web player are free too.

Which audiobook apps work with CarPlay or Android Auto?

BookPlayer and Prologue support CarPlay; Voice and Listen Audiobook Player support Android Auto. A browser player can’t appear in a car’s screen, but plays through the car over Bluetooth with your phone’s controls.

Can I sync my place across devices?

BookPlayer offers Cloud Sync across Apple devices, Listen Audiobook Player has its own sync, and Audiobookshelf keeps progress on your server for every app that connects to it.

Can Audible, Libby or Spotify play my own files?

No. Each plays its own catalogue only; none of them documents a way to add audiobook files you already have. Use one of the players here for your own MP3 and M4B files.

Which audiobook player is best for an older or blind listener?

On iPhone, BookPlayer supports VoiceOver. Dedicated talking players such as the Victor Reader Stream and Bones Milestone are made for blind and partially sighted listeners, and Audible supports them through AudibleSync.

Do I need a server like Audiobookshelf or Plex?

Only if you want one library shared across many devices or people. For books on one phone, a local player is simpler. Audiobookshelf is free and open source; its Android app is in beta and its iOS beta is full, so iPhone users often pair it with Prologue or BookPlayer.
