The short answer
Library servers build your shelves from folders and tags. Put every book in its own folder, inside its author folder, with a series folder in between when there is one.1,5 Audiobookshelf also reads the book number, year and narrator from the folder name, like Vol 1 - 1994 - Title {Narrator}.1 Then tag the files: Plex and Jellyfin take most details from the tags, and Audiobookshelf uses them too.2,5,6

Naming a book folder for Audiobookshelf
| How to write it | Example | |
|---|---|---|
| Book number | “Vol”, “Volume” or “Book” and the number, or the number first, then “ - ” or “. ” | Vol 1 - Title, 1. Title |
| Year | First, or right after the book number, between “ - ” | 1994 - Title, Vol 1 - 1994 - Title |
| Narrator | In curly braces | Title {Sam Tsoutsouvas} |
| Discs | Sub-folders named Disc, CD or Disk and a number | Disc 1, CD 2 |
| Subtitle | After “ - ”, once subtitle parsing is on in settings | Title - A Subtitle |
| Audible ASIN | In square brackets, to help matching | Title [B002V0QK4C] |
Author names aren’t punctuation-aware: “J.R.R. Tolkien” and “J. R. R. Tolkien” become two authors, so pick one spelling.1
The tags that matter
Folder names are only one source. Audiobookshelf’s scanner reads the tags of the first audio file (after sorting by disc and track). Its default order of precedence, highest first: its own metadata file, an OPF file, desc.txt and reader.txt, an NFO file, the audio tags, and the folder names last.2
| Tags it reads | Our editor writes | |
|---|---|---|
| Author | artist, album artist | artist and album artist |
| Title | album, title | title and album |
| Narrator | composer | composer |
| Series | series, show, mvnm | show (M4B), series (MP3) |
| Book number | series-part, episode_id, mvin, part | episode_id (M4B), series-part (MP3) |
| Year, description, genre | year, description, genre | all three |
It also reads side files in the book folder: desc.txt for the description, reader.txt for the narrator, an OPF file (as Calibre writes) and an NFO file. It uses an image in the folder for the cover, and only extracts the embedded one if there isn’t one.1,2,3 Our metadata editor’s library download includes the cover, desc.txt and reader.txt for you.
Plex
Plex has no official audiobook support. The common community setup is a separate library of the Music type for audiobooks, with “store playback progress” turned on for that library only, and careful tags, because the album artist and the folder structure decide how Plex groups books.6 Community guides go further, with metadata agents and an audiobook app on top.7 An app such as Prologue gives Plex audiobooks proper chapters, speed and a sleep timer.8
Fixing a messy library
Merge scattered parts into one file per book
A folder of 40 MP3s works, but one M4B with chapters is easier to move, tag and play. The MP3 to M4B maker does it in the browser.
Tag each book
Title, author, narrator, series and book number, year, cover. For a folder of MP3s, tag them all at once and number the tracks.
File it in the right folders
Download from the metadata editor as a library folder and unzip it into your library, or create the folders by hand as above.
Rescan
In Audiobookshelf, scan the library. If books were grouped wrongly, remove the merged item and rescan.
To add or fix chapters before filing, use the chapter editor. Choosing apps to listen with your server is covered in audiobook player apps.
