The short answer
US Spotify Premium includes 15 hours of audiobook listening a month from its subscriber catalog, for Premium Individual and for the manager of a Duo or Family plan. Unused hours don’t roll over, and hours are counted at normal speed, so listening at 2× doesn’t stretch them. For more, Audiobooks+ adds 15 hours for $11.99 a month, and 10-hour top-ups last 12 months.1,2,3,5

How Spotify audiobook hours work
Spotify’s audiobooks are a subscriber catalog of more than 700,000 titles in the US, plus books you can buy outright.2 Premium gives you a monthly allowance of listening time from the catalog. The amount varies by country and renews each billing cycle.1
- Hours, not books. Any title marked “Included in Premium” can be played; time is deducted as you listen.1,8
- Counted at normal speed. “If you listen to a 5-hour audiobook at 2x speed, even if you finish the audiobook in 2.5 hours, your audiobook listening time is reduced by 5 hours.” Relistening uses time again.1
- No rollover. “Any unused audiobook listening time from the previous month can no longer be used.”1
- The order hours are used: your plan’s hours first, then Audiobooks+ hours, then top-ups.5
- Running out mid-chapter is fine: your place is saved, and the app suggests ways to get more hours.1

Audiobooks Access is an audiobooks-first plan: 15 hours a month with ad-supported music and podcasts, in the US only. To switch, existing Premium users cancel Premium and wait for it to end first.6 Audiobooks+ is a recurring add-on; on Duo and Family, members can’t subscribe themselves but the manager can buy it for them.4 Top-ups are one-time purchases in 10-hour blocks, valid 12 months; if you cancel Premium you lose access to them unless you resubscribe within those 12 months.3,5
What your listening will cost on Spotify
Fifteen hours is about one and a half 90,000-word novels, which run about 9 hours 40 minutes each at ACX’s average of 9,300 words an hour. If you finish more than that, the question is whether top-ups or Audiobooks+ is cheaper for you.
You need 22 hours of listening a month, counted at normal speed.

- Way to get the hours

US prices: Premium $12.99, Audiobooks+ $11.99, top-ups $12.99 for 10 hours (top-up price as reported; Spotify’s pages don’t list it).
Family, Duo and Student plans
- Family and Duo: only the plan manager gets the included hours. Hours can’t be shared, but the manager can buy Audiobooks+ or top-ups for members, and members can request hours.1,4,5
- Student: “The Premium Student plan doesn’t include audiobook listening time.”1
Buying audiobooks on Spotify
Books outside the subscriber catalog, or ones you want to keep listening to without using hours, can be bought (“unlocked”). Spotify says purchases can only be made in the web player for now; on an iPhone you open open.spotify.com in a browser, and on Android you can ask for a purchase link by email.3,7 Bought titles don’t use your listening time and can be bought on the free plan too. What you buy is a licence to listen on Spotify, not a file you own.7
You can download audiobooks to listen offline, but only whole books, not single chapters; downloads work on up to 5 devices and need you online at least once every 30 days.7,10
Why is an audiobook locked?
- It isn’t in the subscriber catalog. Titles you can buy aren’t all included; included ones are labelled “Included in Premium”, and the catalog varies by country.8
- You’ve used your hours. You can’t play catalog titles until your hours renew or you add more.1
- You’re a Family or Duo member, or on Student. Those plans don’t include hours for you.1
Spotify also notes that time used can take a while to show if you pause mid-chapter or are offline for a long time.1
Where Spotify audiobooks are available
On 7 October 2026 Spotify announced it is expanding audiobooks from 22 markets to more than 180 by the end of 2026. In the new markets eligible Premium subscribers get 12 hours a month, and in parts of Africa, Asia and Argentina Audiobooks+ is the main way in. Pricing and access vary by market.9
Spotify or Audible?
Spotify gives hours, Audible gives credits. If you listen to one or two books a month, Premium’s 15 hours may cover it alongside your music. If you listen to long books or replay favourites, a credit or a purchase may suit you better, because hours are used again on every listen and a 40-hour book takes almost three months of Premium hours. See Audible vs Spotify vs Libro.fm vs Libby for the full comparison, and Audible credits explained.
