Audible Credits Explained: Worth, Expiry, Pausing, Sharing

What an Audible credit costs and is worth, when credits expire, pausing instead of cancelling, family sharing, offline listening and quiet audio.

The short answer

An Audible credit buys one audiobook from Audible’s Premium selection, whatever its price or length. Premium plans add 1 or 2 credits a month (or 12 or 24 a year), costing $9.56 to $14.95 per credit in the US. Credits expire 12 months after they are issued and you lose unused credits if you cancel, but you can pause a monthly plan for up to 90 days a year and keep them.1,2

What an Audible credit is

Credits are a recurring benefit of Audible’s Premium plans.2 Each one redeems one title from the Premium selection, shown with a “1 credit” badge, regardless of its length or price.1,5 Premium also includes unlimited listening to the Audible Plus Catalog and member-only sales and discounts.1

Audible renamed its “Premium Plus” plan to “Premium” in 2026; nothing else about it changed.1 It also added a cheaper Standard plan that has no credits at all, and stopped new sign-ups to Audible Plus on 3 March 2026.6,7

What a credit costs on each plan

Divide the plan price by the credits it gives you. The more credits you buy at once, the less each one costs.

Do Audible credits expire?

Yes: credits expire 12 months after they are issued, or when you cancel your membership.2,3 The exception is credits issued through the App Store or Google Play, which don’t expire; extra credits bought in the iOS or Android app don’t expire either and stay after you cancel.3

  • They roll over. An unused credit carries into the next month until it is 12 months old.5
  • A cap, or not? Audible’s help pages disagree. “What is a credit?” says “there is no limit to how many credits you can have on your account at once”; its US “Credit issues” page says “depending on the plan you are subscribed to, the total amount of available credits is limited”, and that credits above the limit expire at the next billing date.2,16 Check your Credit Summary, which lists credits expiring in the next 30 days.
  • Switching to Standard keeps your credits, with their original expiry dates.2
  • Cancelling loses them. Spend them before you cancel.2

Pausing instead of cancelling

Cancelling loses every unused credit; pausing keeps them.9,10 On a monthly plan you can pause for 30, 60 or 90 days, up to three times and 90 days in total in any 12 months, once you have had 30 days of paid membership. While paused you can still spend your existing credits, but get no new ones and can’t use the included catalog. Annual plans can’t be paused.10

How to get the most from each credit

A credit is a fixed price for any book. That makes it good value on expensive books and poor value on cheap ones.

  1. Spend credits on books that cost more than your credit. On the 1-credit plan that means books over $14.95; on the 24-credit annual plan, over $9.56.
  2. Buy cheap books with cash. Short books, older titles and member sale prices are often below what a credit costs you. Premium members get access to member-only sales.1
  3. Check the Plus Catalog first. If a book is included with Premium, you can listen without spending anything.1
  4. Long books stretch furthest. A 40-hour book and a 4-hour book cost the same credit.
  5. Keep a returnable mistake in mind. A book bought with a credit can be returned within 365 days for the credit back, within Audible’s limits.4

Buying, gifting and returning credits

  • Buying extra credits: active Premium members can buy bundles of 1, 3 or 5 credits in the app (Profile, Settings, Membership, Details) or on the website, and 3 at a time on Amazon. Audible doesn’t publish a price; it depends on your plan. Audible Plus, trial and pre-December-2005 legacy memberships can’t.3
  • Gifting: “Credits cannot be gifted or transferred,” but you can use a credit to buy someone an audiobook as a gift.2
  • Returning: books bought with a credit can be returned within 365 days for one credit back, which then expires 12 months after it is issued. Audible can limit returns or remove the self-service option based on your return history.4

Sharing, devices and listening offline

  • Family: through Amazon Family you can share books you bought with one adult and up to four children, and everyone can listen at once. Credits and included-catalog titles can’t be shared. Shared titles play in the Audible app for iOS, the Cloud Player, Echo devices, Fire tablets and the Kindle app.11
  • Sending a book: the old “Send this book” feature is no longer available; sharing a title now sends its details, and the other person decides whether to buy it.12
  • Devices: “There’s no limit to the number of devices you can use with your Audible account.”19
  • Offline: download titles in the app, one at a time (there’s no bulk download), in Standard or High quality (Settings › Data & Storage). On Windows 10 and 11, AudibleSync downloads titles to a computer and syncs them to compatible MP3 players.13,14 Books you bought can be downloaded again even after you cancel.9 The files are protected and play only in Audible’s apps and devices: Audible AAX files explains.

Why is Audible so quiet?

Audiobooks are mastered quieter than music. ACX, where Audible’s self-published audiobooks are produced, asks for every file between −23 and −18 dB RMS, for consistent volume between chapters;17 ACX has also said Audible applies “light dynamics processing” to submitted audiobooks.18 Audible’s help describes no volume boost or loudness setting in its app: the player settings cover the progress bar, skip length, sleep timer, car mode and the like.15 So turn the phone, headphones or car up, or try a different download quality if the sound is poor.14

Audible’s files are protected, so they can’t be made louder outside the app. For DRM-free audiobooks (LibriVox, Libro.fm, your own CDs) the volume booster raises a whole book to podcast or music loudness without distortion, chapters and cover kept.

When credits arrive, and when they don’t

Monthly plans add credits at the start of each billing cycle; annual plans add all of them at once.1 If your payment is declined, the credit waits until the charge goes through, and memberships billed through Apple or Google can see delays.8

Is Audible Premium worth it for you?

It depends on how many books you finish a month and what they cost. One credit a month at $14.95 is good value if you would otherwise buy a $20 to $30 book; if you finish three books a month, a two-credit or annual plan, Spotify’s listening hours or your library may cost less. Questions people ask

Everything else, answered.

What does 1 credit mean on Audible?

One credit buys one audiobook marked with a “1 credit” badge, whatever its length or price. Credits are a benefit of Audible’s Premium plans: 1 or 2 a month, or 12 or 24 a year paid up front.

How much is an Audible credit?

In the US a credit costs between about $9.56 and $14.95 depending on your plan: $14.95 on the 1-credit monthly plan, $11.48 on 2 credits a month, $12.46 on the 12-credit annual plan and $9.56 on the 24-credit annual plan.

How long do Audible credits last?

Twelve months from the day they are issued. Credits bought or issued through the App Store or Google Play are the exception: they don’t expire.

Do Audible credits roll over?

Yes. Unused credits stay in your account from month to month until they reach 12 months old. Audible’s help pages disagree on whether there is a cap: one says there is no limit, another that each plan has a credit limit and credits above it expire at the next billing date. Spend them rather than bank them.

Do I lose my credits if I cancel?

Yes, unused credits are lost when you cancel, so spend them first. Books you bought with credits or cash stay in your library after you cancel, and you can download them again as often as you like; titles from the included catalog lock.

Can I pause Audible instead of cancelling?

Yes, on a monthly plan after 30 days of paid membership: 30, 60 or 90 days at a time, up to 90 days in any 12 months. You keep and can spend your existing credits, but get no new ones and lose the included catalog while paused. Annual plans can’t be paused.

Can I share Audible books with my family?

Books you bought, yes, through Amazon Family: with one adult and up to four children, and everyone can listen at the same time. Credits and included-catalog titles can’t be shared, and the old “Send this book” feature is gone.

Can I listen to Audible offline?

Yes. Download titles in the Audible app (one at a time; there’s no bulk download), choosing Standard or High quality under Settings › Data & Storage. On Windows, AudibleSync downloads titles to a computer.

Why is Audible so quiet?

Audiobooks are produced quieter than music: ACX, Audible’s production platform, asks for files between −23 and −18 dB RMS, well below today’s music, and Audible’s help describes no volume boost in its app. For DRM-free audiobooks, our volume booster raises the level; Audible’s own files are protected and can’t be changed.

Can I gift or transfer Audible credits?

No. Audible says credits cannot be gifted or transferred, but you can use a credit to buy an audiobook as a gift for someone.

Can I buy more Audible credits?

Yes, if you are an active Premium member. Audible offers bundles of 1, 3 or 5 extra credits in the app (Profile, Settings, Membership, Details) and on its website, at a price that depends on your plan. Audible Plus, trial and very old legacy memberships can’t buy them.

Can I use Audible credits on Kindle books?

Audible credits redeem titles in Audible’s Premium selection, the ones with a “1 credit” badge on Audible. Kindle ebooks are sold separately on Amazon.

When do I get my Audible credit?

At the start of each billing cycle on a monthly plan; annual plans add all their credits at once. If a payment is declined, the credit waits until the charge goes through, and memberships billed through Apple or Google can show credits later.

Can I return an Audible book for my credit back?

Within 365 days of buying it with a credit, if you are an active Premium member in good standing. The returned credit expires 12 months after it is issued. Audible can limit returns based on your history, and you start a return from Purchase history on the website.

Is the Standard plan’s monthly book the same as a credit?

No. Standard ($8.99 a month) lets you pick one audiobook a month from the whole collection, but the selection doesn’t roll over and you lose access to those books if you cancel. A Premium credit buys a book you keep.

What is the “$20 Audible credit” offer?

That is a promotional credit in dollars, offered with some Prime sign-up deals, not a membership credit. Offers change often: check Audible’s plans page for the current one.

Are Audible credits worth it?

A credit is worth it when you spend it on a book whose price is above what the credit cost you. Long, new and expensive books are the best use; short or cheap books are often better bought with cash in a member sale.
