Audible AAX Files: What They Are and How to Play Them

What an AAX file is, why it won’t open in VLC, how to play Audible books on every device, what the law says, and where to buy DRM-free.

The short answer

An AAX file is an Audible audiobook with protected audio: an MPEG-4 audiobook, like an M4B, whose sound is encrypted for your account.9 It plays in Audible’s apps, its browser Cloud Player and the few devices Audible supports, and nowhere else.1,3,4 Converting it means removing that protection, which Audible’s terms forbid and copyright law restricts,10,11 so this guide sticks to what you can do: listen on every device you own, and buy DRM-free when you want files of your own.

What AAX, AA and AAXC files are

Audible has used a few protected formats over the years. Its own help pages no longer name them, so this part comes from secondary sources:9

  • .aax, “Audible Enhanced Audio”: an encrypted M4B. AAC audio in an MPEG-4 container, mostly 64 kbps at 22.05 kHz; radio plays and some German titles at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz.
  • .aa, the older formats: “Format 4” at 32 kbps (MP3 audio, mono), and lower-quality Formats 2 and 3, all with the same account lock.
  • .aaxc: an encrypted audiobook downloaded by Audible’s Android and iOS apps, which other players can’t open.21

Today Audible’s apps simply offer “Standard” or “High” download quality in their settings.8 The audio inside is encrypted; the tags around it (title, author, cover) usually aren’t, which is why a file can show its cover in a folder and still refuse to play.

Where your Audible files come from now

  • The Audible app on a phone, tablet, Mac or Kindle downloads titles for offline listening, one at a time, kept inside the app.2
  • AudibleSync, on Windows 10 or 11, downloads titles to the computer, but “can only be played by transferring them to a compatible MP3 player or accessibility device.”4
  • The Audible website: Apple’s Books guide still describes playing an audiobook downloaded from audible.com in Books on a Mac.7 Audible’s own help now sends Mac listeners to its macOS app instead.2,5

Only titles bought with a credit or a card can be downloaded to a computer; titles from a plan’s included catalogue stay in the apps.2

Can you convert AAX to MP3?

Not without removing the protection, and that is where the law comes in. We are not lawyers, and this is not legal advice, but the rules are short enough to quote:

  • Audible’s terms: you may not “attempt to disable, bypass, modify, defeat, or otherwise circumvent any digital rights management or other protection system applied to Content”.10
  • United States: “No person shall circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title” (17 U.S.C. § 1201). The Copyright Office reviews narrow exemptions every three years.11,12
  • European Union: member states must give “adequate legal protection against the circumvention of any effective technological measures” (Directive 2001/29/EC, Article 6).13
  • United Kingdom: section 296ZA of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act gives rights holders action against anyone who knowingly circumvents effective technological measures.14

Buying the book doesn’t change this: Audible’s terms say that when you buy, “you are purchasing a license”, subject to those restrictions.10 So this site doesn’t remove DRM, and doesn’t name or link the tools that do. If you want files you can convert, split, edit or play anywhere, the honest route is to buy them DRM-free.

What our tools do with your files

Every tool here runs in your browser and never uploads a file. They recognise Audible’s protected files, by name and by what’s inside, and say so without changing them. With DRM-free files they do everything:

Audiobook File InspectorNot sure what a file is? The inspector shows its format, length, chapters and tags, and tells you if it’s protected. Free · runs in your browser · nothing uploadedInspect a file

For the formats themselves, see what an M4B file is and audiobook formats by store; for keeping your Audible books after cancelling, Audible credits explained.

Questions people ask

Everything else, answered.

What is an AAX file?

AAX is Audible’s protected audiobook format. Third-party sources describe it as an encrypted M4B: the same MPEG-4 container and AAC audio as an ordinary audiobook file, with the audio locked to your Audible account. Most titles are encoded at 64 kbps. It plays only in Audible’s apps, its browser player and devices Audible approves.

How do I open an AAX file on Windows?

There is no Audible app for Windows any more. Audible’s answer is to listen in a browser with its Cloud Player (online only), or to use AudibleSync on Windows 10 or 11 to copy titles to a supported MP3 player or accessibility device. Files AudibleSync saves can’t be played on the computer itself.

How do I play Audible books on a Mac?

Install the Audible app from the Mac App Store: it needs macOS 15 or later and an Apple silicon (M1 or later) Mac. On other Macs, use the Cloud Player in a browser. Apple’s Books guide also describes playing a title downloaded from audible.com in Books after authorising the Mac, on up to three computers.

Why won’t my AAX file play in VLC or other players?

Because the audio is encrypted for Audible’s own players. Other apps can often read the title, author and cover (those aren’t encrypted), but not the sound. The file isn’t broken; it’s protected.

Can I convert AAX to MP3?

Not without removing Audible’s DRM, which Audible’s terms forbid and which the anti-circumvention laws of the US, the EU and the UK restrict, even for books you bought. We don’t remove DRM or point to tools that do. If you want files you can convert, buy DRM-free.

Can I put Audible books on an MP3 player?

Only on the devices Audible supports, through AudibleSync on Windows 10 or 11: the SanDisk Clip Jam, Clip Sport Plus and Clip Sport Go, and the Bones Milestone and Victor Reader Stream accessibility players.

Do I keep my Audible books if I cancel?

Yes, the ones you bought: Audible’s terms say cancelling “does not terminate your license and access to purchased content”, so you can still play them in Audible’s apps. Titles from a plan’s included catalogue, and unused credits, are lost.

Are any Audible books DRM-free?

Wikipedia says Audible can offer DRM-free titles when a publisher wants it, but Audible’s help pages describe no way to download one as a plain file. If you want DRM-free files, buy from a store that sells them, such as Libro.fm.

Will your tools open my AAX file?

No. The inspector, player and converters recognise Audible’s protected files (by name and by their contents) and tell you so, without touching them. Every tool works with DRM-free MP3, M4B and M4A files.
